My Top 4 isn’t like my definitive Top 4 it’s just 4 films I really like at the minute

***~”******BALLS”** * After putting this off for so long because of its monstrous run time I finally for the first time ever sat down and watched this legendary film, and yeah it’s fantasic. Everything about this film artistically is perfect, the way the score switches between upbeat 80’s sensationalism and the really sinister major horror-like themes, the contrast of the colourful background of Miami against the graphic and at points horrific depictions of violence, this is maybe Al Pacino's best acting role I’ve seen yet. Tony Montana is absolutely pathetic, a small insecure and wretched man only scary because of his money, and it is Great. his character transformation throughout the film is brilliant. An absolutely amazing and over the top crime epic and an incredibly heavy handed critique of greed, corruption, the exploitation of immigrants in the US and the American Dream.

Had this in my watchlist since I Saw Lumet’s *12 Angry Men* last summer A brilliantly exciting and tense crime/hostage thriller and a scathing critique of modern America, A film about the abandonment of Vietnam veterans by the American government, a critique of how capitalism leads to desperation and how money ends up controlling our lives, and an exploration of how people latch onto frenzies like this and their disillusionment with the system. The main 2 actors are absolutely great seeing them slowly dissolve as the film goes on is super interesting and the film gives you enough reason to feel sympathetic for them which makes the ending even more sad. It’s super tense, fearing whether they’ll reach breaking point all film, and the dynamic between the hostages and Sonny/Sal is really engaging. Also its depiction of social issues is very ahead of its time for the mid 70’s. An absolutely great film in all aspects really enjoyed this 👍🏻

Watched with my girlfriend Genuinely nothing to add here. just a good, kinda silly at times but in a fun way, fantasy film with some mega fight scenes and cool characters 👍🏻

Caught a rerelease of this in cinemas with my family A brilliant courtroom drama Rob Reiner was such a varied director it’s crazy. A film about standing against power and authority to do the right thing even if you’re being offered an easy way out and it feels like the odds are so heavily stacked against you, it has an absolutely brilliant screenplay the lines are so impactful, for a film all about dialogue and conversation it’s super engaging and exciting, and it’s even pretty funny and witty at times. Tom Cruise is suprisingly excellent he’s super energetic and I really loved his character, this sleazebag army lawyer always looking for the quickest way out finally finding real meaning in his work and making his father proud. And the rest of the cast is also great with a lot of “hey I know that guy”’s in here. Not a criticism at all btw but it’s so weird to watch a Jack Nicholson film where he’s mostly absent up until the end, so used to him being the lead star in everything, he is great in this though delivering the most iconic moment of the film by far. The score is super great and memorable aswell Really had a great time with this.
