perhaps the most apt quote to describe the characters in PTA's films. with films like the master and magnolia PTA is constantly exploring what it means to find purpose and meaning in a life with so many rules and boxes. phantom thread might be the most quintessential when it comes to these themes, always possing the question of "will they conform for each other?" and ending with a resounding yes, because they need to remove the "great big mystery" in their lives. many of PTA's characters latch onto ideas and people in their quest to remove all mystery in the same way alma and reynolds latch onto each other, even if it means abuse and sacrificing all integrity.
PTA is a genius and i miss daniel-day lewis please just make one more movie.
