This was a surreal experience. Sure, it’s slow, but it’s so obvious how much Tarkovsky cared about telling this story; it feels so personal. Do I understand this completely? Of course not, but nonetheless, I felt so ingrained within the story that I couldn’t keep my eyes away.
The imagery in this is second to none. The way he switches between time periods and colours, and the use of natural elements to tell the story is just insane. Everyone always told me how good Tarkovsky films are, and I kind of just shrugged my shoulders, but the two of his films I’ve seen so far have already left such an impression on me. I think Solaris might be next on the cards.
