Hellbender
Hellbender is such a unique little gem!
it’s raw, dark and honestly kinda hypnotic.
you can totally tell it’s low-budget, but that’s part of the charm—it doesn’t try to hide it and somehow it works.
the visuals are insane, trippy in the best way—they play so much with colors and textures and there’s this mix of creepy and beautiful that keeps you hooked.
the story is simple but solid—it’s kinda derivative, but idc; it borrows from the best and does its own thing with it.
it’s all about Izzy and her awakening, her powers and what that means for her relationship with her mom.
the cast is super small and I love that—it helps you get super invested in the characters.
you really feel locked into their world and that world feels so tight, almost suffocating, like the woods around them.
the occult vibes are SOOO on point—you can see all the influences, like ’60s psychedelia, ’70s glam and that grungy indie edge from the late 2000s.
the mix of witchcraft, philosophy and ritual is just so cool.
it’s not spoon-fed to you, which I appreciate—it’s like you’re piecing it together as Izzy does.
Izzy’s transformation is wild, from this sheltered, curious girl to someone who fully owns her power—that evolution is scary but also kinda badass.
the themes hit hard—obviously, witchcraft and matriarchy are front and center, but there’s so much about growing up, finding yourself and stepping out of someone’s shadow.
it’s about independence and ego and the way it tackles those things feels fresh even though it’s wrapped in an old-school witchy tale.
if you’re into witchy stuff or occult horror, you’ll love it! it’s dark, artsy and unapologetically weird—not perfect, but honestly, that’s part of what makes it so fun to watch!! what a fresh take on an old witches tale 🔮🧹
