Kill Bill: Vol. 1
When I was in 5th grade I was sleeping over at my friends house and as it was getting really late, assuming no one was awake, we snuck upstairs to grab some snacks. As we were lurching up, we saw that actually my friends dad was awake, and he was watching Kill Bill vol. 1. My friends dad noticed our sneaking and invited us to watch with him. I remember being awestruck, I had never seen anything like it. Up until this point my parents only let me watch G rated movies, sometimes PG if they deemed it appropriate enough. They were always strict on what I could or couldn’t watch, and for a few moments I got to witness what movies really could be.
We were at the scene where Beatrix is in the restaurant fighting The Crazy 88. It was a brigade of constant blood, violence and swordplay. To my 5th grade brain it was unbelievable, I never knew movies could be this cool. This feeling was short lived though because soon my friend’s mom walked in. She made us go downstairs as wouldn’t let us continue because I guess my Mom specifically said I wasn’t allowed to watch any “inappropriate movies”
I remember my friend being upset with me, claiming it was my fault we couldn’t finish the movie. I was so embarrassed but I was even more disappointed that we couldn’t continue watching.
In that moment I had a glimpse of what real movies were. I remember thinking that the first movie I wanted to see when I was older was Kill Bill. There seriously were times when I’d imagine what else happened in the film, I created my own beginnings and endings to Beatrix’s story in my head. I feel as if I can trace back my love for movies to that exact night. Not being allowed to finish it made me view films as a taboo allure that I desperately wanted to experience.
When I finally did watch the movie it was everything I wanted and more, it was immediately my favorite film and to this day remains in my top 5 and I think it always will.
I saw a clip of this on TikTok and felt obligated to rewatch, mainly because the clip reminded me of this story. Truly one of the best movies, my first ever favorite.
