Nosferatu
Upon rewatch as well as gathering analyses from the public on this movie, I have to give it 5/5
I already had it very highly rated based on its stunning cinematography, flawless acting, and its chilling atmosphere, but now that I’ve watched it again with new insights and seeing that Orlok represents Ellen’s sexual trauma, it adds the perfect layer to this story that pushes this film over the edge.
It’s absolutely genius to add this aspect to the story, it makes everything all the more unsettling. It also makes Lily-Rose Depp’s acting more impressive. You can feel the guilt flowing out of her character. The Vampire(trauma) is a literal disease that affects everyone around it. It affected Ellen and Thomas’s relationship, she wanted to be with Thomas so bad, but she was ultimately forced to face her trauma head on, leaving us with an excellent final scene.
I hope people don’t get it twisted, this is most definitely not a love story, or a period piece, or simply a vampire movie. It’s a unique way to show how our trauma affects us and those around us, specifically the immense sexual guilt forced on women especially around the time this is set.
Eggers is truly one of my favorite directors and I am excited for what he has next.
