Oppenheimer
This movie is so dense it’s almost impossible to talk about. There are some scenes here that were better than any movie I’ve ever witnessed in my life. All this had to do to be perfect was condense the run time and show more emotion, other than that this is one of the best theatre experiences I’ve ever had.
I love history so I already knew I’d be a fan of this. Blessed to see it in IMAX, I assumed the visuals were what was going to make this so great but it was actually the audio. The score and sound design are amazing, often my favorite parts of each scene. I think the auditory choices were the best part of the whole movie. I also need to mention the acting, amazing across the board but the highlights for me were Emily Blunt, Matt Damon (especially for his comedic relief), and of course Cillian Murphy.
I loved the way this story was told, unlike any other historical movie, this one was chopped in short and small puzzle pieces and put together in bursts, as if Christopher Nolan had found a corner piece and was able to build around until he found another corner on the opposite side of the puzzle. Some scenes from before the creation of the bomb and some after, all coming together to tell a full story. This is what makes movies so great is their ability to be able to tell stories in boundless ways.
My favorite sequence in the movie is the last hour of the courtroom type cross examination, which has my favorite scene when Oppenheimer sees the stunning visual flashes as if he’s inside experiencing his own creation. The scene of him being questioned just builds and builds tension until it explodes (ha) making it what I think to be the best moment in the movie.
One last thing but it feels at points in this movie they shift to kind of try to make you sympathize with Oppenheimer for the position he’s in, I don’t think that was the right direction to take, I’m not going to feel bad for this guy that would be insane.
Okay I’m done rambling, I enjoyed this a lot but can’t help feeling slightly annoyed about how close this was to perfection.
