Another shout-out to Yumika for the recommendation.
I hate everybody in this film, and that's because in every character, you can see some part of yourself in them. The film doesn't shy away from the dark themes; it forces you to watch. It makes you want to live your life to the fullest. Sumida's pain is portrayed to be devastatingly quiet, and it's only at the end of the film when the music makes it so much louder, and he comes to terms with it. The atmosphere was constructed perfectly, and that scene when Sumida finally lets himself become infatuated with his rage is shot so beautifully. One overhead shot that doesn't cut away, it becomes exhausting to look at, but you can't pull yourself away. Absolute masterpiece.
