The Host
This is why you should listen when your science professor tells you not to dump liquids down the drain.
Let me start by saying this film immediately interested me. The cinematography was stunning to say the least (as usual with films directed by Bong Joon Ho). It showcases a beast hellbent on destruction, which is a typical plot on the surface of many monster films, but Bong Joon Ho, however, refuses to play into the typical conventions of monster-driven plotlines. The monster is shown within the first ten minutes of the film, so it's not as though we're expecting some grand reveal which we knew was going to come anyway, and rather than revealing it slowly, we're shown it in broad daylight. This film is a mixture of both horror and comedy, not the same slapstick comedy that you may be imagining, but rather a satirical commentary on the role of media manipulation, especially in a world with no clear-cut heroes or villains, as we as the human race rarely are. Definitely one of my favourites.
