Caché
this is one of those films where you have to perceive everything in your own way and predict what happens because there is no clear indication it ever will. Michael Haneke is a master at leaving questions unanswered while hooking tbe audience with long, uncut, often uncomfortable shots.
what i found the most striking in this movie was the way only Anna seems to be the one reacting correctly. she’s angry, paranoid and afraid for her son and for herself and for her family, every little thing is ticking her off whereas Georges is eerily laidback, of course because he knows who is doing this and the reason behind it as well. even though we, as the audience, never get to know who sent the record tapes throughout the movie or afterwards.
Georges is a man drowning in guilt for betraying his childhood friend, he is talking to his mother about it and he is breaking down while thinking about the fact that something from decades ago is haunting him. Majid’s suicide is the last straw for him and Majid’s son whose motives are still unclear, but perhaps revenge? given the closing scene of the movie.
this is just a sad and haunting tale about a man who can’t brinh down the irreversible wall of guilt he has surrounded himself with. i really liked this movie. i think it’s one of the most compelling movies i have seen from Haneke so far.
