Funny Games
another absolute banger from Michael Haneke.
i mean let's just talk about the opening sequence on it's own. from the start of the movie we understand they are not exactly in control. Anna and Georg are listening to classical music but we are listening to death metal. they do not make horror movies like this anymore. the young actor who played Georgi was absolutely amazing. in fact, all the actors in this movie were phenomenal. but back to Georgi, his death reaaalllyy pissed me off. because if you look at the way he handled his escape, trying to climb up the fence, failing and then going by the beach and into the house, i mean he had that survival instincts ON! after he got caught, he just had to go. he was too resilient for Paul and Tom, compared to the easy-going family. which might i add, the most stupid fucking family ever to exist on film. and i think that was intentional, i mean obviously. my interpretation is that, Anna and Georg are clearly wealthy. they have a boat, a rich, warm, big house, and have clearly lived a sheltered life so they are more trusting to people like Paul and Tom. this is also why at the end, they can find another target so easily because they never really think twice about their safety. is there a social commentary there? maybe, maybe not. it was not confirmed so i'm not sure. Susanne Lother who plays Anna gave an outstanding performance overall. never once did her performance falter for a single second, her consistency with the grotesque violence around the movie is staggering.
so, my question after allat is why did Michael Haneke make Paul talk to us? why break the fourth wall? well he did answer this, and his exact words were that we are too desensitized to violence in media so the primary goal was to make the audience as uncomfortable as possible. well, he succeeded.
