Satantango
not an everyday opportunity to see sátántangó in an american cinema. oh my hungarian heart. thank you tarr béla for this masterpiece & for reshaping hungarian cinema forever.
hungarians are just so melancholic and even though we hate the melancholy, i feel like we like living in it because it’s such a familiar and almost comforting feeling. each tarr béla film perfectly portrays our pure misery, the doom and despair of our lives, but sátántangó does it on another level of perfection — the imagery, the soundtrack, the dialogue, the acting. the almost fake optimism that ends in yet another disappointment. the endless suffering and misery. oh, what a masterpiece.
pieces like this make me exceptionally proud of being hungarian. the ability to connect to the work first hand because of the feelings ans experiences that come with being hungarian is truly something to cherish. no one understands this film better than we do — it’s not just because of our gorgeous and unique language, but our culture, our history, and our collective experiences. no one can take this away from us.
