Adolescence
I think this is a really important watch especially for people whos concerned about the the current and future generations. It wont bring you answers but itll give you an idea of how different everything is for the generation that grew up in the age of social media. How tightly knit everyone who share the same interests are and how easily they can get wrapped up in a whole different world without any warning. Especially children. I also kinda have a bone to pick about people complaining how little the show explains about the phenomenon of violence against girls and the radicalisation of young boys. Its a netflix show..
It wont bring forth a solution, its not supposed to. And it wont give you a break down on all the details hell they wont even give you a proper explanation on why he did it. That why we have documentaries and research papers. But it did its job which was to bring awareness to the audience. I mean at least to me it did.
I think the reason why they mentioned the “manosphere” or “andrw tte” so vaguely is to show how bullshit the internet culture really is and how for the older generation, it sound like something so incredibly foreign and, ig nonsense but extremely normal for young people. Like when the scene came between the detective and his son, i thought it was brilliant how they represent the two generations. How difficult it is to communicate an issue because both technically grew up in entirely different planets. “Everything means something” and “80% of women are attracted to 20% of men” like wtf is that. But it makes sense to the kids who grew up with it and parents just need to know that. Like how easily new ideals can be ingrained into their childrens minds.
And to me, katie not having any lines and not being shown once is a reflection on society when cases of violence against girls or women happen. Even though one of the detectives mentioned about it in ep 2, we hear less and less of katie because the victims are often overlooked. Their names are dragged through the mud to get some sense of why the murderer acted that way even though we know its not katies fault. Its a hard watch but i think that was the intention.
Bottomline is, its aimed to start a conversation, and it already has
