Alien
Ridley once said that, with Alien, he wanted to create a hybrid of 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. He succeeded, big fucking time. It’s a nightmarish and nasty combination of those films— 2001’s practical, believable mechanics of life in space and TTCSM’s descent into inescapable terror in a remote locale. It’s a pure and dreadful symphony, lathered head to toe in admiration for characters, discovery, a science-fiction future, and its dirty and claustrophobic environment. A dripping sense of terror in each scene through its quieter and intimate tone. Gnarly, impeccably designed, fleshed out working class characters and world building that says corporations will always fuck you in the ass even in the far future on the edge of space— relatable! Spine-tingling horror sci-fi masterpiece.
