Contempt
The main character of this film is incredibly unlikable, he verbally and even physically abuses his wife and flirts with his colleagues without much regret. He’s simply a bad person and a film with a completely detestable main character can never hold any stakes to the viewer. Worse, the vast majority of the other characters are also problematic and have few redeeming qualities. I can’t even point out a specific aspect of the confusion of this movie, but overall it’s just very scattered. Emotions flip on a whim and events occur strangely. The dialogue is very odd and often contains random quotes from literary works for seemingly no real reason. It’s just all very frustrating to watch. The pacing is also a massive issue, the description of the film I read said that his wife slowly fell out of love with him during the making of the film, however almost immediately she decides within the span of 30 minutes she no longer has any feelings towards him. It’s almost comical how quickly the whole movie passes by and I found myself with 45 minutes left wondering how one hour of film contained so little of the plot moving forward. So much of the screen-time went to nudity and pointless dialogue it was an agonizing watch.
