Superman
Sort of like the boys’ version of Barbie. That’s not to say that someone can’t enjoy whatever movie based on who they are as a person, but this needs to reach the target audience to remind them of childhood and reassure them that there is hope. I’m serious when I say that this film’s messaging could help reverse years of toxic masculinity for a lot of guys. On this rewatch, a small boy, probably around the age I was when I used to run around the living room in my Superman costume, happened to be sat next to me in the theatre, taking in all of the colourful cinematic glory for the first time. He laughed, he smiled, he might’ve even cried, and I couldn’t help but admire this individual watching their hero onscreen in what is an authentic comic book experience for kids and adults alike. The truth is, most of us guys are all connected in one way or another to this iconic character, and to watch one kid witness the very anchor of what might become a generation-defining series of comic book films was nothing short of priceless. This film reminded me why I actually love superhero movies in the first place. Being kind is the new punk rock!
