Stalker
Whatever i write or say won’t truly do it justice, but i’ll give it a try
Tarkovsky’s Stalker is nothing short of magnificent, it is a thoughtfully crafted exploration of humanity, faith, morality and the darkest most dreadful parts of this very concept, all through the lenses of this muddy and morbidly unique sci fi, using the genre as a medium to truly showcase some rather harsh truths about humanity and our selfsh and morally gray nature.
Who wouldn’t think of going to the zone? make yourself rich, live a happy life, have everything you’ve ever wanted, but that’s the trick, the zone only guarantees you get what it is that you truly desire, crawling without caution through your subconscious and exposing your filthy nature.
The truth is, no one truly knows themselves and what lies within your darkest thoughts, the question is, would you dare wonder into the zone, and discover who you truly are? i myself would not, i rather choose a life of comfort than exposing something i would rather left unbothered, because the zone knows you better than you know your own self, or at least the self that is truly deep within.
However, it is not all dark and gloomy, there is also hope for human kind, marked brilliantly but the ending sequence, showcasing that even from pain good things can grow and nourish, exemplified but the stalker’s daughter, previously thought ill, having apparent telekinetic powers, a gift, interpreted to be from the zone, that marks hope in what was already believed to be lost. A very ambiguous and bittersweet ending, but that, good or bad, marks the beginning of something new, and if something can grow out of all that pain, it means that there’s a possibility for change.
