The Devil's Rejects
Viewed in theaters
The Devil’s Rejects operates within its own warped reality one that never directly invokes real world atrocities and yet it stands as a defiance of the very logic that would separate fiction from them. It presents unspeakable evil and gruesome murder with zero glamor, forcing us to endure it and quietly asking what exactly we find compelling or entertaining about such depravity and then in its final stretch, it exposes the futility of trying to reverse that violence, of attempting to turn it back on those who committed it. I don't say this very often when it comes to movies, but I feel like if this was directed by Tarantino rather than Zombie the reception would be much different.
Also, we can all agree this definitively has the greatest usage of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Free Bird in any movie, yes?
