Joni's Promise
i miss wokenesia :(
i never thought i would love this, especially because it’s joko anwar. but the first 5 minutes got me hooked. nicsap is a great narrator and soooo perfect for this role. my only thought for the entirety of the film was that: this is so Jakarta! I love it! maybe because i just grew up around here that i just couldn’t imagine this being filmed anywhere else. i wouldn’t even call this indonesian because it’s so uniquely jakarta! for some reason. the people, the conversations, the attitude, the personality. all are central to the life of jakartans!
i just think the film is cute and warms my heart. maybe it’s the young nicsap, maybe i’m just easy to please. there’s not a single unfunny comedic scene that i remember, everything just goes so well. there are times where u kinda could guess which direction is this joke turning to, but most of the times you could never guess what the characters are gonna deal with lmaoo? it’s just fun and camp! this reminds me of tingning in a way i can just tell the crews are people who are passionate about films and filmmaking. you’re never gonna get this from a sinetron crew.
back to my first statement about wokenesia, this film once again proved me how woke indonesia used to be. maybe i did not live through it, but the treatment of things considered “haram” was so different back then. you’re never gonna see some of these scenes again on your cinema. they just won’t do it. i like how the only annoying character of this film was an annoying dudebro who can’t stand women. overall enjoyable plot, pace, likeable characters. the only thing that piss me off is probably how naive joni was, but i just remind myself he’s probably gonna get a happy ending anyway so i just forget about it. also hate that dukun feature, feels out of place at some parts. but still OK, 5/5 for the vibes and enjoyment i got. probably never gonna rewatch again tho.
