Obsession
(Out of an abundance of caution, I say that this review contains spoilers, whether or not it does. I don't think so, but beware, I guess) As you can tell by the watch date, I have been sitting with this movie for a long time, unsure of my thoughts on it. (Nearly 5 days) As of today, I have finally decided that it is a masterpiece unlike anything I have seen before. I could and probably will go on and on about everything this movie does right i mean the cinematography is gorgeous and forboding the way that you can't see nikkis face and shes pitch black in the shadows for one is amazing all of the miniscule details (a lot of which i caught but did not fully piece together until watching a video breaking them down) The main themes of male lonliness and toxicity are more then ever present espically with the times we live in today. I went into this movie cautiously because I heard about the rape and animal death. I will say I would have preferred not to have the main rape scene in the film, but I do, in a sense, understand its importance. Normally, I watch movies like this with someone, my dad and my brother mainly, but they refused to watch it because of the themes, and honestly, who can blame them? I would never recommend this movie to my friends who were raped, and I understand that, especially in the current administration we live under, the themes of bodily autonomy are ever-present. I was disappointed that the theater I watched it in had people yelling about scenes during the movie, which I have seen has happened to other people online, and I hope it's just that I watched this movie so late after it came out. But who knows? I think movies like this and some of my favorites are especially important to me because of the loneliness. I do feel that I have to tread very carefully and say that although I do feel me and Bear share some of the same traits of being lonely, quiet men, I disagree with nearly every choice he makes in the movie and find him despicable and the true villain of the movie. I truly have never been more frightened watching a movie than this one, and can some of that stem from this being my first horror movie watched in theaters, and first movie watched alone in years? Yes, but I still think that this movie is truly something to behold. Can I speak more about this movie? Most likely, but I feel as if this review is already incredibly long, so I will end it here! I may come back and add more if that is a thing that can be done on letterboxed!
