Ready Player One
Kind of in a mood of euphoria right now, i rarely write anything, let alone for this movie because i have always been pretty clear on my thoughts about Ready Player One from the first time i saw it back around 2019 but im going to attempt to this time.
Finally got to see this in the cinema and for 140 minutes i was smiling from left to right(like i always do when watching this tho so not that different this time).
I know quite a few people dislike it because of either its bad book to movie adaptation or the overly corny feel of this movie and while that is completely valid as someone who has not read the book(fully) i dont really know to what extent that criticism is valid so im not going to talk about it but just stick to the movie.
When thinking of why i love this movie given that its my favourite movie of all time i always just say its fun and while that is true its just more.
I love the amount of references and easter eggs hidden in the movie from the opening race through new york to central park with king kong, dinosaurs and little dangers around every corner, all while akiras bike, elviras car, monster trucks and many culturully iconic vehicles drive in it and its just so much fun.
The CGI is in conversation for some of the best of all time its so well made and every single character, challenge and world is so full of life that i cant help but have nothing but praise and tbat is my next point.
The soundtrack is also some of the most well put together aspects in my opinion, every single one just fits and comes just at the right time and also on my favourite parts of this movie.
References: kind of the most important part of this movie, i think its lazy to just watch this and say heh that was fun because all these small easter eggs and references are so important for pop culture, its so validating and fun to see all these famous characters or objects in the movie from characters like chucky, tmnt, freddy krueger all referenced in some way or other.
I also really like the characters(for the most part) wade watts is so nerd like and kind of corny(in a good way) and while he is kind of generic i just cannot help but like him(same goes for aetch, artemis, daito and sho(the high five) i dont think their the greatest written characters ever but like i said i relate to wade watts for a part so i cant help but like him.
All the challenges are just so well made and fun from the first race to the shining challenge(GOAT) to the last easter egg while their appearance is not that huge its so wonderful watching every time and all circles back to the reference part all culminating into the golden egg.
The world building is also pretty good, i know its not LOTR level good but thats ok, the general society is so caught up in technology and this digital world but why wouldnt you be, their world is filthy, ran by big greedy companies that only have the best in mind for themselves and the one thing they have is the OASIS and i kind of think its starting to move that way to this world too for a little bit, people( me too) are so dependent on technology, gaming that its become a part of our lives and thats not bad but its important to stay aware of this and not fall too deep into this hole but if you dont its nothing but fun.
Some of my fondest memories come from references, i have always been a ‘gamer’, not as much now but still and it has always been something to fall back on with some of my favourites being Dark souls 1, elden ring, nfs rivals, RDR2 and the god of war reboots and i have always found comfort in them and there is a reason like for many.
I have aspergers, which used to be a part of autism but today not anymore i think, so certain aspects have always been kind of difficult for me like communication, making new friends or just being myself and Ready Player One as cringy as it sounds kind of did that for me and as a result i hyperfixate on things i like(with ready player one being one of them) and i have always had trouble with just knowing what to do in life, like making new friends, doing new things, school and everyday life and every bad day, event or moment in life i just watched it at the end( probably would have more than 25 logs if i had letterboxd back then😭) and because of that i never had someone(except one friend) to talk to or do these things with and that just made high school less fun but in that case i would just watch this after a school day and its something i still do occasionally but not as frequently as i used to do and it just helps.
Everyone has a comfort movie or something they do to get calm and for me this is one of them, i deeply love this movie despite all its flaws because everytime i had a bad moment in life i could watch this and every time i have a great moment i could watch this i love this movie deeply and it will probably be my favourite movie for the rest of my life(it would take something astronomically unbelievable to dethrone this movie) and its not something i can express in words even though thats what ive tried to do here.
My favourite movie ever and so happy i got to watch this in the cinema😊.(also finally moving this up to a 5)
