The Father
I feel as though I’m losing all my leaves.
Such a wake up call. This movie is identical to the situation my family is facing with my Grandpa and after Mother’s Day I suggested to my parents that we watch this together.
I say this over and over again, but yes, Anthony Hopkins gives one of the greatest lead actor performance ever. Olivia Colman is also phenomenal here. The production design and cinematography are subtle but very effective.
The Father is a psychological thriller disguised as a family drama. Similar to Memento, it’s a movie that puts you in the mind of the lead character and allows you to understand where they are coming from.
And while Memento’s narrator is unreliable in telling the chronology of events, The Father is even move complex, being more concerned with the unreliability of who characters are, what they look like, and where they are in the world. It makes you reconsider how you view those with memory decline as they age. The tiny details in clothing are genius and the chamber piece aspect allows the time of day to “change” at the flip of a coin.
A brilliant film that will change how you view the world we live in.
