The Substance

There's been a slight misuse of the substance. After watching Triangle of Sadness, I've been thinking about what will be future classics. Movies that will be studied for decades to come. What's this eras Citizen Kane or Psycho? On another rewatch, I'm confident The Substance will be one. My new favorite film from 2024, there are so many intricate and fascinating aspects of this film that it's overwhelming. Two pitch-perfect performances from Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley. A bonkers cinematic scream of a screenplay that aims to tear down the absurdity that is modern beauty standards. And finally, one of the boldest and most stylish directing job of the past few years. Coralie Fargeat crafted a masterpiece, and it's very reassuring that the Oscars were able to recognize the genius in front of and behind the camera on this film.
