The Virgin Suicides
Other than maybe GoodFellas there isn’t a film out there with a better soundtrack for me. I knew about Air’s song that features throughout, but had no idea about a lot of my other favourite songs being in this too. And none of the needle drops are put to waste, so so good
Loved how the whole thing felt like a childhood dream. All the warm oranges and cold blues match the balancing act Coppola plays between the childlike innocence of the (albeit creepy) boys that serve as the protagonists and the incredibly serious subject matter. Trip Fontaine seemingly appears out of nowhere, and disappears just as fast. None of this felt real, but there is still an emotional weight that you would expect from a film about teenage girls committing suicide. Loved the choice to not really focus on the boys as characters, it made me feel like I was reminiscing on something from the past that I only have a hazy memory of, rather than watching a narrative unfold.
