Nightcrawler
Very good first half, disappointing second half.
For the first half:
I loved that the movie took its time to show little details and character development.
The world gets explored really well.
There were many beautiful looking scenes, and the pacing was perfect.
The film often reached a point where something had been fully explained, and it always found the perfect moment to move on.
The message of the movie is still communicated very subtly here and left open to the viewer’s interpretation.
For the second half:
Everything goes downhill from there.
Everything gets shown in a super on the nose way.
Characters are just placed into the story to make a single point and nothing more.
Frank as an example is basically there to represent the moral perspective for the viewer, and that’s it.
Just lazy writing.
The movie focuses too heavily on one subject, which makes it feel very one dimensional at times.
Louis Bloom can do whatever he wants and keeps getting away with it.
Throughout the whole second half, the movie keeps screaming in your face that he is pursuing his goal and going too far in the process (we get it), but then he gets a happy ending, which can almost suggest that his behavior is justified or even good.
The way the movie shows what journalism is today and what it does to our society is good, tho.
Throughout the whole movie, the music was amazing, the look and the vibe were very good, and the acting was very strong.
So yeah, we have an amazing first half and a pretty bad second half.
