mother!
i don’t think i’ll ever stop talking about this movie like ever.
i preface my words by saying: even if i am gay, i still am a man and don’t understand everything regarding the experience of being a woman (a misunderstood one at that) so please take into consideration why i do love this film so much, even with its controversies.
it is ABYSMAL that jennifer lawrence did not get an oscar nomination for this. her acting is off the fuckign charts (and that’s what particularly makes me excited for die, my love!!), i felt so stressed when she was, felt her pain when she experienced it, her small moments of happiness and euphoria, yet her fits of rage and emotional distraught. mother is a character that, on paper, sounds so hard to perfect: someone who is always giving and is never given, dismissed in her opinions, only useful for those around her, is often a liability but always the voice of reason trying to hold it all together around her. meanwhile him’s character is the complete opposite: cold, opposing, orderly, and obviously bipolar for how he can go from loving her enough to the point of… yeah…. to then staying awake for 24+ hours just to steal her baby. jennifer lawrence is elevated on every level. and javier bardem is wonderful too!! i love an actor who plays the villain so well that it makes me hate him, and god, i hate him. but her character is the best kind of roller coaster ever. you genuinely can’t help but go through what she goes through because what else do you do in these kinds of situations? when she’s helpless so are you.
the film is well shot in that way. the majority of the time, and i seriously mean majority, the cameras on her, all the POVs and over the shoulders, or just the shots of her eyes, it’s all about her. if something happens in the distance, we don’t know until she goes and sees what it is. the audience is stuck with her as she deteriorates mentally and physically. it’s also got no music (no the tribal and club music doesn’t count) or original soundtrack except the lovely patti smith rendition of “the end of the world”. which makes it all the more isolating, in a big ass house in the middle of a field.
the message is 100% clear if you’re not a dumbass. yes mother nature is being abused by humans because climate change DOES exist, and yes the biblical allegories i won’t get into cuz idk much abt the bible but i do know the cain and abel situation, jesus christ, body and blood, the man and woman, the rib, and the whole “let there be life” thing. but at its core it is also a societal commentary. women have to be under the expense of others who always take and take and take, yet women still give and give until there’s nothing left to give. then what? you get crazy and mad, and for good reason too. how can someone take everything of yours and expect more, then get upset when you can’t do anything about it? but then when you get mad at them, then they attack. and yes, that scene IS as difficult to watch as it sounds. and it’s agonizing to watch because nobody will listen to her!! she doesn’t want anything but peace and to be with her dumbass husband. and i don’t wanna talk at ALL about the baby scene.
the first hour and a half are admittedly misleading and confusing, which is a good thing. i mean ed harris is enough but MICHELLE PFEIFFER UGHHHH!!!! that woman is irresistible!!! those two are lowkey freaked tf out the whole movie but it’s okay.
again i won’t shut up about this movie ever. does that make me weird? maybe but idc its a dope ass film that needs to be in all film schools now.
the kristen wiig cameo is actually the most unexplainable thing about this movie
#topstats#💥#imma eat ittuhh#mindfuck#batshit insane#actor who played a villain so well i hated them
