Zootopia 2
Zootopia 2 is the best animated movie I’ve watched in quite a while. I didn’t think they’d do well because the first movie set a high standard, but I was pleasantly surprised. I appreciate this movie so much, largely because of how it presents societal issues while also delivering solid character dynamic exploration.
This movie tackles institutional racism and exploitation in a capitalist society. Not only does it reflect how government corruption and historical revisionism can erase literal towns off a map, but it also shows how difficult it is for people to care when minorities are “othered.” It features differences in culture and how those differences manifest into apathy. It even shows how nations continue to exist on the backs of natives without giving due credit because of corporate greed. Zootopia was built on colonialism, with displacement still backed by the rich. This systemic inequality shows how the privileged will turn a blind eye and even participate in genocide. All of these themes were woven into the story so well that even kids can understand them.
I also appreciate how Judy and Nick’s partnership was handled. Even though they work well as a team, the writers did not shy away from pushing the boundaries of their differences. Judy’s ego and Nick’s deflections pile up throughout the movie, and then we get a resolution that tops even the biggest blockbuster films today. Their confrontation scene was honestly the best dialogue I’ve watched in a really long time. Throughout the movie, they undercommunicate, so when the tension finally explodes, they spill everything out, and it was beautiful to watch. I love characters who confront their feelings, and that scene absolutely made me love this movie even more.
Lastly, I’m so happy with the new additions to their friendship. Found family is my favorite trope!
This is so perfect, and I regret not watching it earlier. I loved the prequel, and I love this sequel even more. I’ll say it before and I’ll say it again: no one is illegal on stolen land!!
