Get Out
I've been putting this off for too long because psychological thrillers aren't my best friends albeit being one of the best genres out there.
insane fucking concept, I was so locked in throughout. the attention to detail, especially the references to slave trade and the colour pallette used- goddamn. and the racism depicted in it is complex; it's different to overt hatred that is typically observed. it's curiousity, jealousy, and awe repackaged into something far more disgusting, ultimately still asserting dominance. made me sick to my stomach.
the ending worried me, I thought that the outcome would show that the system will always be the system and Chris would get in trouble for all of that; but at the end of the day the system doesn't care enough for people of colour so no wonder they wouldn't search for him. and I'm glad it ended the way it did, it was satisfying to see that he got out. Rod is a nice touch of comedic relief, amazingly written character that saves the day.
