Midnight Cowboy
was able to experience this a lot better on a rewatch and there's too much i'd like to say to fit in one review lol greatest movie ever
something i thought about this time, though – having read the book now, the one thing i guess i'm upset about is that the movie is not as gay! joe and rico are clearly in love, yes, and the subtext is there if you know what to look for (while their relationship feels more special in the book) but ALSO. in the book joe is bisexual. there's a passage about this one guy he had relations with and then it's said there were many people "female and male alike", while in the movie the only sexual encounters he has with men are with clients, and those weren't positive at all. not to mention they're work and don't count
it's not like i expect of a 60s movie to be explicitly queer and i know it wouldn't have done as well as it did if it was. but it's upsetting they toned it down and i think i'm allowed to feel that way
