Interstellar
Murph’s relationship with her father reflects mine in a lot of ways; I idolised my old man when I was young, loved him to pieces, until he did something that completely ripped me away from him. Murph’s anger at him, that tear jerking rage that she had at his decisions truly had me breathless because I’ve never seen the anger that a daughter can have at a father done like that- where I felt very seen. The years of not understanding why, growing up cursing their decisions, rejecting their advances for communication because there is a young girl who never got to heal from that betrayal, nursed in the folds of adolescence and young womanhood.
Murphy gets her happy ending with her father, and I don’t think I will get mine- but what interstellar does is give both perspectives: why a daughter hurts the way she does, and why a father must break hearts in order to protect them.
