Boogie Nights
The way PTA segways the 2nd half of this movie in is completely outrageous and I love it. We are nearing close towards 1980 and the closing of a 3 year period where dirk and horner are riding high off of their films. We get PSF kissing Dirk, Dirk trying coke for the first time and the idea of Home Video movies. And Then Little Bill initiates a tracking shot and a long take that cuts in an extremely clever way with a camera flash. Little Bill is pissed with his wife cheating and whoring around so he shoots her and the man right as the 70s die into the 80s.
Not only is this masterfully crafted in a filmmaking and Acting Perspective. It also sets up the entire last hour of the movie which shows how awful the 80s will be for our characters the movies suck, the money runs dry and everybody's addicted to drugs.
Nobody benefits after this and it is completely masterful filmmaking from PTA.
I'm starting to ask is he the best director ever? I've only seen PDL,Hard Eight and this, but the way he commands a camera and keeps you engaged via blocking is something up there with De Palma and Kurosawa.
