Jake Lamotta is an insecure,toxic and abusive man and it shows a bit at the start of the movie,but it only accelerates when he gets with Vickie. He becomes overprotective because he realizes that other men will chase her too. We them happy through the montages and the fights,but it's all an illusion he alienates his brother and his wife who still stays with him after he beats joey up,but the marriage is failing and does fail. Lamotta loses his wife,his club and is just an old has been in miami sharing stories of a past life. Scorsese does a really great job of showing this in the movie as through the years and fights we see lamotta get worse and worse and gain more weight.
