Rebecca
Hitchcock masters the art of misdirection in this. What starts off a story of a man grieving over his widow turns into a marriage gone wrong and then also has a layer of homosexuality and obession in it.
I didn't notice until like an hour in that joan fontaine did not have a name in this movie. Rebecca's shadow is casted over our world that the new Mrs. De Winter serves almost no revelance to those who knew rebecca before.
No matter what Mrs. De Winter does she will never be rebecca she tries to dress as her she is immediately rejected by Maxim. She isn't as virtuostic as Rebecca as seen in the scene where the guests ask her about her interests and she doesn't really seem to have any.
Rebecca despite never appearing on screen owns these peoples minds. Hitchcock threw me for a loop with this one with the twist of Rebecca having cancer being a shock.
The only film that Hitchcock won for an oscar and I would be wrong in saying that I'm suprised. So much depth in the shots especially in that trial scene which reminds me of elements of the start of the 2nd half of Vertigo. The Acting is crisp and is just so engaging.
