Django Unchained
Holy shit this movie is peak. This is by far Tarantinos best film and after a rewatch the gap between this film and his others is just getting bigger and bigger. If someone told me that one of the best directors today paired up with Christoph Waltz, Samuel L Jackson, Jamie Foxx and Leonardo fucking Dicaprio who all give Oscar worthy performances in one of the most interesting and exciting plot ever, I wouldn’t believe it but after watching this again it’s not far from that.
This is probably one of Tarantino’s most original films and I don’t really see a big 1 to 1 inspiration for this. It’s got the best qualities of a Tarantino film: The bloody and violent endings, the non linear narrative, strong themes on morality, a meta analysis on film and his homages to previous films like having the actual Django stand side by side with Jamie Foxx. I think one of the most glaring parts of this film especially is that it’s got a lot of meta qualities. It’s really self aware about the white savior character of Dr. King Schulz but at the same time clearly goes against it by making Django his own fully fleshed out character who has his own sense of self control who isn’t inferior to Schulz and by the end of their training montage is placed higher than him by Tarantino. The blending of 2 events in American History is also perfect as well. By fusing the American slave trade and the Wild West, Tarantino creates this spaghetti western with racial tensions that constantly motivate the story.
I love the cinematography behind this film every scene is beautiful especially the night scenes which keeps the scene illuminated while keeping it so dark. These characters are amazing as well I love how Tarantino writes his characters as well. King Schulz is definitely my favourite from here played by Christoph Waltz. His character is this virtuous man but while he hangs around Django he starts having an inner conflict with his realisation on his morals being faulty and getting challenged. The boiling over of the tension where he just kills Leo is so satisfying but also is part of this redemption to his character because he’s distancing himself from the flesh for cash business which he is apart of in this story as a bounty hunter. Django is probably the most badass character I’ve ever seen. This guy is the best gunslinger in the west, kills everyone that has wronged him in the most violent and satisfying manner possible and even fucking wears the clothes of the man who’s been the antagonist of his story😭 Also Leonardo Dicaprio and Samuel L Jackson play some of the best and most cunning antagonists ever. LEONARDO FUCKING DICAPRIO INJURED HIS HAND AND WENT ON WITH THE TAKE AND HE DID THAT. THATS WHAT A LEGENDARY ACTOR DOES. This is one of if not his best performances ever and Samuel L Jackson isn’t far off either. I love that scene in the end where he drops his cane showing how he gives a false sense of superiority and is also extremely cunning. I saw this interview where he talks about how Tarantino didn’t want him for the role of Django because he was old so now he gets to play the guy who torments Jamie Foxx in the story it’s just funny to me😭 This movie is perfect for me I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of it. It’s so well paced that the 2hrs 40min run time really goes by fast.
