Scream 3
I genuinely don’t understand why Scream 3 isn’t as much liked… Even among the fans of the franchise, I discovered that it never quite goes high in the rankings. Sounds crazy to me when this encapsulates exactly what Scream seemed to always prepared to be: pushing the boundaries of metatextuality to the max.
Yes this is funnier, more camp and bites its own tail maybe too constantly but the Hollywood setting and where the franchise is at that stage make it make sense. We comment horror trilogy, all bets are now off, it’s more than logical than the structure of the story itself has to be quite chunky on its way, fulfilling us with reflection on our own perception of the franchise and what we believed was true. The voice changer then appears like a total logical continuity, being able to bring suspense to the extreme, luring us even more by impersonating anyone including dead people. Forcing us to an extent to not trust anything we see or what’s been established before.
The franchise reached its climax of meta awareness as the killer targets actors from the new horror film produced in the Sunrise studios: Stab 3. We are immersed in the film industry, it was funny to talk about it im previous movies but now we’re here to live it in its most sordid way. Violence has come to a point where it circulates among medias, movies take advantage of violence for their own merits, ignoring victims for the sake of doing good at the box office. Producers lies, hide secrets and still get away with it, while the previous films approached violence through media consomption, this one recenter it to its source: the movie makers, producers of their own violence. That’s why Hollywood was such a good setting for this opus and how Scream 3 is actually able to significantly surprise us by retroactively reveling a detail that was the most crucial just falls in so smoothly. Roman as Sidney’s brother works perfectly for me and solidifies even more that violence depiction rooted in the behind the scenes of cinema. Maureen Prescott was forever changed by Hollywood, she was blamed by her peers and often pointed out for everything that happened to this point but if only they knew what she’s been through while trying to make her way through the film industry. It is pretty insane that the Weinstein brothers produced this one because that’s literally a film about them and all the cruel shit happening in the undersides of Hollywood… And the film works brilliantly as such while being such a fun and dark slasher.
Pls considerate this film more 🙏🏻
