Sinners
Honestly one of the best and most fun theatrical experiences of my (short) life. Came back a few days after watching it for the first time to see it again with my dad, and it was equally amazing the second time.
I think the most appealing part of this movie is the seamless integration of music. An absolutely phenomenal soundtrack that was cinematically executed perfectly. From Sammie's song, to Pearline's song, to BOTH of Remmick's songs I was blown away.
Beyond that, it cannot accurately be described as a horror film. The "horror elements" were definitely present, but to describe it as such is to discredit the piece as a whole. The thematic exploration of both the historical period and the larger social commentary was emphasized by the fear, not defined or overshadowed by it. The fear and tension simply heightened the emotional experience, leaving horror as a true medium for communication in a way that is often forgotten in modern works.
The entire cast performed so well that it is impossible to define an MVP, although Michael B Jordan's ability to meaningfully portray himself as two distinct characters deserves special notice.
Ryan Coogler has crafted a piece of art that will define his career no matter what is to come, one that left a substantial emotional and thought-provoking impact felt for days after watching.
10/10, I truly think that everyone should give it a try, even if the "horror" label is a turn-off, since it really should not be defined as such. Everyone I know at least enjoyed it to degree, with the lowest grade I heard in person being a 7/10.
Give it a shot.
