have been in stuck in a cycle of being rather burnt out and emotionally depleted recently, i suppose it comes with the weather and the cyclical nature of waking up and trying to do work whilst stuck with unrelenting mental haze. i had heard a lot of good things about this film and whilst post seeing the trailer i didn’t really think of it as something i would want to go and see, i conceded to the generally positive consensus and went to see it. it’s been a while since i have been to the cinema anyway and needed that post cinema buzz that comes from seeing a really good film, after having been stuck in a marty supreme and crappy remake purgatory. and whilst it’s not reinventing the wheel this film did that. this is one that needs to be seen in the cinema. although it felt like a bit of emotional whiplash from tearing up to then start chuckling at whatever witty remarks are being made, this is what i want from a film, to be invested and feeling things with the narrative and the characters. i haven’t read the book, or truthfully didn’t know this was an adaptation, so can’t contest on the accuracy from book to screen but this film just felt like exactly what this kind of story needed. a kind of content and feel good from a story about people and humanity, even if said humanity finds itself in different forms. i had no idea as to what this film was about save for it being set in space and i truly think that’s the best approach. maybe this makes me conceited or maybe too aspirational, but this film kind of broadens whatever little bubble of doom and gloom i’m in to the broader realm of people and humanity and the amazing things that are possible and that are within reach and makes me want to be a part of the bigger picture. i want to be remembered for doing big things or making a difference, maybe not on a wide scale, i shan’t inflate my ego that much, but to the people that matter. this is quite corny, yes i’m aware, but what a lovely film and how lovely it can evoke these feelings. that’s what cinemas about after all. maybe my rating is quite high and maybe i’ll shift it around but right now i’m feeling in very high spirits. and then they played the beatles!

dire really that i hadn’t seen this before seeing the 2025 remake. admittedly, i think the handling of the monster sympathises more in the newer film. What felt like one of the only points in which we see what was intended to be his nature in is the scene where he throws the small girl into the lake. There was no intended malice in this action, he likened the girl to the flower petals floating on the water. there is an innocence in the monster, being much like a child. it’s in this we question is the monster really the villain, or the scientist that created him wanting to play god. that being said i think Boris Karloff’s performance as the monster is pretty unbeatable. also dire that i’m only just watching this when i’m doing my dissertation on both newer adaptations of frankenstein & nosferatu. the difference between the character of elizabeth in this and the newer one is also interesting. the elizabeth in this film is capable of being expressive, she is not subjugated in this regard, but she lacks her own accord. she seemingly only appears by a means to share a concern for her husband-to-be’s scientific endeavours.

springs inbound and through what has been many a days of rain and grey sullen skies we had the first glimpse of the inbound sunny days of spring on valentines. i can’t say i saw much of it as i found myself in the windowless expanse of my workplace, yes, the irony isn’t lost on me. the short lived moments of sun i caught in the morning put forth my excitement for the forthcoming season hence my watching of this film. i have managed to catch a cold of flu of some kind and was in need of some tranquility. this was my first eric rohmer film i have watched and i thoroughly enjoyed. beyond the films incredible beautiful visuals i was very much allured by the poignancy of delphines tale of loneliness. beyond both having dark curly hair i find myself seeing much of myself in her character. an incessant loneliness and feeling like you’re doing something wrong even if it’s something you’re aware of. i shan’t explain nor list the ins and outs of her character or how i resonate with her, i’m sure someone else has more aptly talked about this, but more so want to state that this film has felt like a breathe of fresh air with what has been a slightly busy, stressful and anxiety filled couple weeks. lovely, lovely film, is something i’m sure i will revisit time again.
