Frankenstein
dire really that i hadn’t seen this before seeing the 2025 remake. admittedly, i think the handling of the monster sympathises more in the newer film. What felt like one of the only points in which we see what was intended to be his nature in is the scene where he throws the small girl into the lake. There was no intended malice in this action, he likened the girl to the flower petals floating on the water. there is an innocence in the monster, being much like a child. it’s in this we question is the monster really the villain, or the scientist that created him wanting to play god. that being said i think Boris Karloff’s performance as the monster is pretty unbeatable.
also dire that i’m only just watching this when i’m doing my dissertation on both newer adaptations of frankenstein & nosferatu. the difference between the character of elizabeth in this and the newer one is also interesting. the elizabeth in this film is capable of being expressive, she is not subjugated in this regard, but she lacks her own accord. she seemingly only appears by a means to share a concern for her husband-to-be’s scientific endeavours.
