One thing I’ve come to learn about Takashi Miike is that you can give him the most pedestrian, middle-of-the-road, borderline plagiaristic script and he will execute it with a finesse that makes it stand out as not only original, but of a much higher quality than the hundreds of other genre films that came out alongside it. It’s absolute cinema and a hidden treasure.
