Blade Runner
Week #44 (Winter break #6): It really does speak volumes, how much outside interference can muddle a tigthly strung together work of art. So many parts of the Final Cut are essential in enriching this film, the violence, the unicorn and the lack of an unenthusiastic Harrison Ford voice-over. But, I have to say, it is really impressive that they were able to make a sci-fi movie more confusing than 2001: A Space Odyssey. This movie is so abstract with its themes and I've only really picked up on them on this second watch. What is it to be human? Memories? Pain? Memento mori? I do not know, and I didn't get to know that from this watch.
My feelings toward Blade Runner are very much similar to 2001: didn't really enjoy watching it, despite the stellar visuals, but I will very much enjoy thinking about it.
Good job, Ridley Scott! This is the first movie you directed that I actually liked and respect! Although it is really hard to give you the credit with such a crew.
Edit:
Sat with it for a few hours, mainly because of the unicorn. And it hit me: this might be one of my new favorite movies. I wanted to watch it, thinking it would be one, but I was just really put off by it. But, that freaking unicorn and piano put it all in a new perspective for me. God damn it this movie is good!
