Zodiac
This movie is actually perfect.
Fincher is just insane honestly. Every time I watch one of his movies I end up thinking it’s my favorite. But this one is peak.
The cast is amazing. Gyllenhaal, Ruffalo and Downey Jr are all perfect in this. Gyllenhaal especially is one of his best performances.
Everything about this movie is just dialed in. The pacing, the atmosphere, the tension, it all works perfectly for almost 3 hours straight and it never drags once.
It just looks incredible too. The way it captures that time period feels so real and immersive.
Everything is done in perfect taste. There is no over the top gore or anything that feels unnecessary, like in many true crime movies. The basement scene is pure anxiety without being exploitative. It does not rely only on the Zodiac himself either, and instead focuses so much on the journalists and detectives, which makes it even more interesting.
Also the obsession in this movie is what really ties everything together. Not even the killer’s obsession, but how it slowly consumes the people trying to solve it. It becomes this spiral where the case stops being just a case and starts taking over their entire lives.
Even the music is used so well throughout and nothing ever feels out of place. It is actually funny in the right moments too. The blue drink scene is hilarious. Everything is so intentional and nothing ever feels unnecessary.
Also imagine going on a blind date and Jake freakin Gyllenhaal shows up. honestly what a life that would be.
