Moonlight
it's like 1.30am so none of this is going to make any sense but we're gonna ball. I'm not exactly sure how to even put this movie into words.
i absolutely love how this film is structured with the three sections it feels like you aren't missing anything and that we can truly see chirons life and his struggles and how prominent they are throughout his life from childhood and teenage years to adulthood.
act one feels like chiron truly learning about life and how different he was but it's also about him learning to trust with him and juan in the water and juan teaching him how to swim but i'm doing this it teaches him how to be comfortable in things that scare him.
water is such an important thing in this movie from chiron learning to swim to in his teenage years when he and kevin are there and even when he washed his face after he gets beat up. water seems to be a part of his life when he's vulnerable god i don't actually know how to explain what i'm thinking but it's just genius what is done with the water and the lighting
"but in the moonlight black boys look blue" is by far the most popular and one of the important lines of the movie. it means that chiron is defined by more than his skin colour, it means to be yourself and i think this is so important with the scene in his teenage years when he's at the beach.
my favourite shot in the entire movie is when kevin and chiron are sat on the beach and the camera is above them and they look up towards the moon laughing i just think it's so raw and ugh perfect it's what i feel like incorporates everything i love about the movie into one shot
trevante did an amazing job playing black it really stood out to me. in the third act we see chiron and he's completely different from the chiron we're used to he's confident and goes by the nickname black something which he opposed to earlier on i think this shows the sheer effect that kevin beating him up had on him and i think the scene of him washing his face as a teenager and him as an adult really reflects that.
THE COLOUR BLUE. it's soso important throughout the film obviously the moonlight and being blue and yourself in it but also the constant use of it everywhere in scenes. i saw someone mention on the day kevin is told to beat chiron up kevin is wearing a grey shirt with blue stripes and chiron is wearing a blue shirt with white stripes showing how they complete each other however once chiron try's to get his revenge, kevin is wearing an all grey top which shows the loss of chiron. blue also being the colour of the light surrounding kevin when he phones chiron and talks to him for the first time in years, after that there isn't much blue in the rest of act three and they don't have that vulnerability back that we see that has always complimented the colour blue UNTIL they go back to kevin's house and he's wearing an all blue tshirt and chiron starts to talk about his feelings. in the scene were little talks to juan about being gay the sofas in the background are blue showing how safe he feels being there and that he's finally learning about who he is and what comes with that which i think is really what little is learning about. chiron on the other hand is leading the consequences of being black and gay and all the other set backs involved but black is unlearning the wall he has built because of these consequences bringing back his vulnerability which we see earlier in his life.
there is so much more i could talk about like chirons mum but ive already yapped on for ages so i guess yous will have to wait for the next time i watch this movie giggle.
chirons mum is so almost unsettling in the 2nd shes addicted to drugs and is honestly terrifying. naomie's performance is incredible. i really hated her but when it came to act 3 i feel not bad for her and i don't hate her but she's trying it's just too little to late. i also really love teresa and how she really stepped up not by being cool and fun but by giving him rules and advice to help himself so he grows into a good respectable man who doesn't fall into a life like his mums or juans even though she loved him.
"your my only and i'm your only" just makes me sob every single time god chiron i love you.
god the cinematography is just incredible i feel like ive spoke about it so many times but THE BEACH SCENE ugh its so perfectly shot along with when he comes home and his mum is shouting at him. i also really love the different ways chiron in a car was shot and how it shows who he is at the time.
hello stranger by barbara lewis is soso perfect i actually can't stop smiling during the scene.
the final scene UGH it's so intimate and perfect there's just a feeling that i can't describe it's like so overwhelming i mean its probably just a built up over the whole movie i can't not sob.
the movie ends with little looking back at us the watcher at the water in the moonlight. this is an absolute masterpiece of a movie.
god this review just jumps about and doesn't make a whole lot of sense but i really just needed to put my thoughts about this movie out there so it might be messy and awful but hey it's exactly how this movie makes me feel i guess.
please ignore any bad punctuation or spelling it's never been my strong point
guys if you loved me you'd buy me the screenplay with the frank ocean prologue
