Alien: Covenant
dare i say best Alien instalment??yeahhh of course i do. once more?BEST ALIEN INSTALMENTim dying on this hill btw
i was a bit worried that it wouldn’t actually be as great as i remembered, given the first watch was in the midst of my Michael Fassbender Frenzy™️, but i was proven wrong.
okay so basically, Covenant still has all of the franchise’s codes; space exploration, the harrowing tension plus the blood and gore and, of course, the aliens/xenomorphs/whatever. i reckon the film’s modernity actually helped enhance most of these markers while developing its origins.
what makes this film different though, is how much depth it garners.
of course, we’re still in the register of a sci-fi blockbuster so it’s not deeply philosophical work, but still, i reckon it’s a lot more interesting than the space slasher it was before, no matter how good that was.
so to delve into that, the foundation of Covenant is, as they said, “The question of the ages: Where do we come from?” and i love how it was crossed with Alien. most of that is catalysed by David’s character (loml btw) who represents that cycle of making and maker, explored throughout the film and paralleled by Walter, the “better” David. i found that interesting, how him being a better version is because of his lack of humanity. do humans consider themselves fundamentally flawed?
