Phantom Thread
man PTA might just one of my favorite filmmakers. from the four films of his I’ve seen, he’s so versatile in his craft and manages to retain this same inexplicable style of sincerity throughout all of his work. his films just always leave me in awe by the end, and Phantom Thread might be one of his best. This is easily PTA’s most romantic and tender film (yes even more so than Punch-Drunk Love).
Daniel Day-Lewis completely contrasts his previous PTA role, playing a cagey, guarded tailor whose walls he’s built to protect himself from vulnerability and love gradually erode over the course of the film. It’s a wonderfully subtle performance reflected in his body language and facial expressions. Vicky Krieps is fantastic too. The awkward but heartfelt and sincere chemistry Alma has with Reynolds made the film completely. Jonny Greenwood’s score is predictably perfect, combining cool jazz with swooning strings. PTA is just kinda the GOAT, man. Theres not been one movie of his that hasn’t moved me on some level.
