as of 2026 its simply the best movie ive ever watched. subtle (maybe not so?) criticism of the societal problems in our world and the simple idea that all people are downright stupid at one point fascinates me and i love to watch movies that contain these type of messages. the most special thing about dogville is in my opinion, the clearness. dont get me wrong, i love watching arthouse films, yet whle watching like some films like "lobster", my mind goes blank after finishing them and i sometimes need to dig down to the films core by doing research and it bothers me a lot. but right after watching dogville, i got the message of the movie, and i just had to interpretate it. sure i did some research but it wasnt in order to understand the movie, but to view some other aspects of the others, including the director, lars von trier. and i hate the fact that i hate nicole kidman but every time i watch any of her perfprmances, my jaw drops.
i just remember how i tried to resist my father to "not watch an old movie" it turned out it was and still is on of my favourite movies. again the message is so simple yet so nice it makes me wanna watch again and again and again
the kid of my lst. yeah it has no spesific theme, yeah it has no genre. just piss of. this movie made me shit myself of laughter and get thrilled at the same time, so how could you pass on this movie? let me say one last thing: because of the 2025 istanbul film festival i accidentally watched this film 2 times in 1.5 weeks. as a non-obssesive cinephil i only watch my top films and the more complicated ones more than once but it was a joyful ride to watch pulp fiction again, laughing my ass of and admiring the acting performances while outright remembering the whole script. this movie tastes like a night-out with the wrong people at the wrong night at the wrong place but it delivers the best night youll ever have.
im not going to lie, every day im trying to decide, whether eyes wide shut or donnie darko should be my last pick for the letterboxd top4. what causes this movie to be interesting is i think the mystery of it. going over a not-so-happy relationship while revealing the bourgeois cult system and doing it magnificently is only something stanley kubrick can do. just the other day weve been talking about this movie with a friend and i told him exactly that when i have to choose between two films, one having no filler scenes and one having a man walking down a street for 10 minutes, i would probably choose the packed film, whether it be action, drama or horror. but in eyes wide shut, i really enjoyed watching tom cruise walking and not doing anything else. it made me actually think and imagine myself beside him. i also love the art of details in a movie, and well who cares about it more than kubrick? some points in the movie, for instance bill not being able to cheat on alice, even though everyone in his area being superficially attracted to him and so on. best movie of kubrick, no it is not the shining nor 2001 (theyre also veeery good but.. there shall be only one winner!)
