Midnight Mass
5/5 Mike Flanagan is the future face of horror if not it already.
Midnight mass is phenomenal throughout using the driving force of the topics it represents and shows brilliantly. The ties to religion in this are so well done, easily the best written limited series I’ve seen. Even as an atheist the show made me question the idea of religion in a way I hadn’t before. Once the angel is revealed admittedly the horror elements of the show don’t hit as hard as they did earlier on but the commentary on those last couple episodes made it still enjoyable. The first half of the show has such a great feeling around it, a similar feeling I got watching John carpenters “the fog”, it could just be the coastal setting that’s making it feel similar but it makes for a great watch regardless. The acting is also phenomenal but the one stand out is 100% Hamish Linklater who puts in some of the best acting I’ve ever seen, definitely top 10 acting performances in any show for me, it’s been a couple years since this show released and he hasn’t done anything huge yet but he most definitely should be as I think him doing a big name project would be nothing short of brilliant and he definitely could put himself up there with the best working.
Mike Flanagan doing limited series is something I hope never ends and I’m excited to see his upcoming mist and exorcist films as anything this man does I’ll be there day one.
