Bo Burnham: Inside
I have Covid, so rewatching Bo Burnham’s Inside to try to fall asleep dealt appropriate. This is such a unique special and I believe there is truly nothing else like it. I’m always enamored by so many of the little editing decisions that add depth along with interesting lighting choices to keep the whole movie feeling fresh. Then the erratic sequencing of all of the bits truly captures the feeling of not only existing through the pandemic, but also experiencing depression when you can’t have community with other people. Even the songs that don’t fully hit such as White Woman’s Instagram or Sexting, feel like less of misses because of the editing, lighting, and creativity to make a tired concept still feel fresh.
There was a period of time I could not stop listening to this soundtrack over and over again in mid 2021. Through the beauty of hindsight, I can see just how depressed I was in those moments. Bo Burnham’s Inside, as depressing as it can get, helped me feel seen in a way. A truly special thing to get from a movie, but it’s nice to know I’ve moved on from such a depressive point, and I can enjoy the movie as an exploration of the relationship between performer and audience moreso than the deeply personal aspects.
