Parasite
After sitting on this some more, I think I liken Parasite to the literary version of The Great Gatsby.
The Great Gatsby, to put it kindly, is a bit blunt with how it utilizes it’s literary techniques to tell its story. But, the way it uses multiple different literary techniques enhances how rich the story is. It can also be used to show up and coming writers how implementing different writing techniques can enhance the richness of their story. So despite The Great Gatsby’s bluntness, it still tells an engaging story that can also be shown to aspiring writers on how to create a compelling story.
Parasite does the same thing. It really Jones in on different aspects of cinematic storytelling to show how you can enhance a relatively small tale to feel grandiose. Parasite goes out of its way to really show the differences of class utilizing classic cinematic language in ways that some can look at as blunt, but once you start dissecting the framework of the story it helps it hit harder. But if you go into Parasite and know nothing about cinematic language, you’ll still have a great time because the language exists for a reason. It’s there to help make a story more rich.
This movie is a rare breed where I think you can show it to nearly anyone and they’ll enjoy it for one reason or another.
Edit: This SHOULD win best picture, but Americans don’t want to read.
