Origin

Such a fantastic film from Ava DuVernay! The film does a really interesting job breaking down the idea of the Caste system and how it reaches into every part of society. I had no idea about the Dalit community in India. Seriously heartbreaking stuff. What this film attempts to achieve it’s extremely ambitious and it mostly pulls it off. The direction and writing are excellent but it’s the truly outstanding cast that carries this film home. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor turns in a brilliant lead performance. 2023 has been one of the best years for lead actress rolls. So many outstanding performances this year. The supporting cast is super fucking strong. Audra McDonald specifically made me fucking cry with her genuinely moving scene. Origin is a very special film that Neon unfortunately didn’t promote. I really hope the letterboxd crowd gets behind this and people go check this out.
