Queer
Ordered the A24 Blu-ray edition of this. I think it’s super cool to see a studio releasing physical copies of their films. I actually decided to rewatch the film with the commentary on. I haven’t really ever decided to do this before but I had such a great time. I seriously couldn’t love Luca Guadagnino more. His films really opened my eyes to the artistry of film back in 2017 with Call Me By Your Name. I felt such deep, strong emotions through film. The craft from the tiny details, like the opening credits, to the immaculate cinematography really made a lasting impression on me. From then on I was a Luca super fan. Hearing Luca talk for 2 hours and 20 minutes was such an incredible insight into how his mind works as a creative. He really is brilliant. The commentary has Luca, the costume designer, the production designer, the editor, and the writer all chiming in. They provided some really interesting depth to the film. It’s very clear to me that Justin Kuritzkes and Luca Guadagnino have such a deep understanding of William S Burroughs. This film is a very well crafted exploration of his life. They have some really mindblowing details like the final costume we see Lee in being the exact thing Burroughs was buried in or the lyrics from the closing song being from one of the last things Burroughs ever wrote. Luca also clarifies that this is not a film about unrequited love but one about unsynchronized love. Lee and Allerton do have their moments of synchronicity but also ones where they worlds apart. I just absolutely adore the way Luca understands desire. I’ll end with this quote from him that really has stuck with me.
“The possibility of an encounter lies in the possibility of seeing yourself into the gaze of another”
